GURU Style Star: Donald Williams II! Plus, our GREEN WEEK 2013 Sweepstakes!

I noticed Donald Williams II’s colorful plaid bow tie before I even took in the rest of his outfit.

This week’s GURU Style Star looks like he could have walked straight out of a fashion spread!

Donald, a world religions teacher at St. Paul’s School for Boys in Brooklandville, scored his bow tie from Nordstrom. It’s by Ben Sherman. His yellow and white pinstripe button-down is also a Nordstrom find. His red-orange chinos are from J. Crew. He also found his Sperry Top-Siders at Nordstrom.

Here’s our Q&A…

Describe your style.

I would say preppy is how I dress all the time for work and everywhere I go — except for Saturdays when I’m doing yard work.  I try to stay classy.

Tell me what you like about wearing bow ties.

It makes one distinguished. It’s an art and it’s really classy. It takes us back to times when men always used to get dressed instead of wearing jeans; men would always wear suits.

What is your favorite store in the mall and why?

My favorite store in the mall is probably Nordstrom Rack, because you can purchase everything at a discounted price… It’s a classic look. It’s not trendy but it’s classic. It’s timeless.

What do your students think about  your style?

They admire and are inspired by my sense of style.  More of my students have started wearing bow ties since I’ve come onto campus… I’ve been told I may get voted best dressed teacher of the year.

How has your style evolved?

It’s gone thorugh a number of changes. I’ve gone through a lot of life changes myself. In grad school, I started wearing bow ties everyday. Every time I wore a suit or khakis and a shirt, I would wear a bow tie to dres it up.  As an undergrad, I was wearing more urban and rugged wear — more trendy… The way I’m dressed right now takes me back to my high school days. I went to Mt. St. Joseph High School. We would dress like this all the time (minus the bow tie).

It’s our green themed week on the blog. What do you do to go-green?

I go paperless on all my bank statements.

GREEN WEEK: TOMS Shoes at Nordstrom!

Our Green themed week continues with a look at TOMS shoes, available at Nordstrom. TOMS has a focus on giving back and on being environmentally friendly!

The TOMS collections include styles that are are made from sustainable and vegan materials. This is the Classic Earthwise Slip-On. It’s made from sustainable materials and has a recycled rubber sole.

Plus, according to TOMS, ”All of our shoe boxes are made from 80% recycled post-consumer waste and are printed with soy ink.” The company is perhaps most known for its  One for One campaign. TOMS donates a new pair of shoes to a child in need for EVERY pair purchased.

Her Coach wedges, accented in lime, are a Nordstrom find.  Bailey’s decision to wear the wedges on this day wasn’t just about her outfit. Since she was out shopping with her mom, who is on the shorter side, she purposely went for a smaller heel.

Describe your style: 

I would say it is fairly eclectic. I like classic with a combination of sharp and interesting. I don’t like to be too trendy. I just like things that are a little more classic and timeless.

What trends are you most excited about for the season?

I like all the bright colors. I like the flowy tops. I’m just excited not to wear winter clothes — I’m done!

What is your favorite store at Towson Town Center and why?

Nordstrom —  the variety of clothing that they have and the customer service and I get good points! (She is referring to the Nordstrom credit card.)

If you could go back in time to any decade to experience the fashion of the time, which one would you choose and why?

The ’20s. This is when women were first starting to show their knees and not be as modest. They really used their styes to embrace their creativity and personality more than they had in the past. The haircuts are phenomenal. Love the dresses.

GURU Style Star: Kristen Luther

I never would have thought about pairing peach and lavender until I saw Kristen Luther the other night at the mall. Check out how the peach pops out from the lavender cardi!

This week’s GURU Style Star exudes spring with her peach tee from American Eagle, topped with a lavender sweater and a floral scarf. Her scarf and skinny jeans are also from American Eagle. Kristen’s gorgeous boots, with gold detailing, are by Vince Camuto and from Macy’s. Kristen’s bracelet is from Pandora.  She calls her style, “classy, outgoing and comfortable.”

Describe your style. 

I feel like everyday it’s a little bit different. I’m not afraid to wear combat boots and shorts, but I do always like to have one thing that is colorful.

Why is that?

I feel like it brightens my day if there is color…  It reminds me of spring and summer, which are my favorite.

Do you like trying on different outfits or do you dread it? 

I love it. I think it’s so fun to go though and try to create a new outfit out of a bunch of different pieces that you have. I love to give people fashion advice and help them pick out their outfits. I like it when I feel my best in what I’m wearing. I like when other people wear something that makes them feel confident.

If I gave you $5,000 and sent you on a shopping spree at the mall, what would you buy? 

First, I’d go to Free People and quite possibly spend all of it there. But if I didn’t, I would go to Steve Madden and buy new shoes to match every outfit that I own.

Brutina is wearing a leotard-style top with a blazer, accented with a New York & Company floral scarf.  Her graphic print, skinny-cut pants are an H&M find and are now on my wish list! Her silver belt is also from New York & Company. Brutina finished her look with studded flats.

I would say a simple unique style.

What look were you going for today?

With the mix of patterns, maybe something different.

What do you like about mixing patterns?

It’s different. I wasn’t trying to go for anything traditional at all.

If I gave you $1,000 to spend anywhere in the mall, what would you buy and why?

I would probably go to the Louis Vuitton store.

What’s your favorite store in the mall and why?

My favorite store in the mall is Nordstrom because of the different styles available for women.

Trend Alert: Printed Shoes!

Do you decide what pair of shoes you will wear after you’ve narrowed down the outfit and accessories or do you build your look around your shoes?  When it comes to one HOT shoe trend for spring, you just may want to start with the shoes!

Printed shoes are in for spring.

Check out these standout looks from Aldo (Level 3)!  This bright pattern takes on different personalities as a peep toe wedge and as a studded mule, with a cut out heel.

I’ve never seen a rounded-toe ballerina flat quite like this style from Aldo! These flats (available accented in black and bone or bone and white) features studs and a whimsical print, reminiscent of comic book pictures.

Over at Steve Madden (Level 3), from a distance these flirty platforms look like they are embellished with lace, a hot trend for spring! It’s part of the print.

This Steve Madden sandal features a corset-style lace up back.  They make a surprise finish to white denim cropped skinnies, an accent to your LBD and can also be paired with bright hues.

It didn’t dawn on me until I read the description of this hot platform wedge, that the pattern is an animal print. The print is described as a “water colored abstract leopard print.”

GURU Style Stars: Regina and Christina

Meet this week’s Mother and Daughter GURU Style Stars: Regina and her 16-year-old daughter, Christina!

This mother-daughter duo are excited for an upcoming trip to Italy together. Several pieces from their outfits are from one store at Towson Town Center. Read on for the reveal.

Christina scored all the pieces in her outfit at American Eagle (Level 1). She is wearing a teal top with a keyhole detail on the back, white skinny jeans, a braided belt and platform sandals.

Regina’s khaki jeggings and suede flats are also from American Eagle.  She layered a navy cardi over a fun, graphic print sleeveless top. Her bag is from Macy’s.  I only wish I had asked about her statement hair piece.  (I want one.)

Now for our Q&A…

How does your mom influence your style?

Christina: She keeps it appropriate.

Describe your style:

Christina: I like long skirts and long flowy dresses. I hate to generalize myself, but I like the hipster kind of style.

When it comes time for Regina to answer, her personal stylist, Christina, chimes in first:

Christina: I feel like she tries to keep it young and fresh.

Regina:  I want to be current. I don’t want to look like a 16-year-old, but a little more modern look.

If you could get your mom to try a new style, what would it be? 

Christina:  Ripped up jeans.

And while that’s not Regina’s taste, she says of Christina:

Regina: She keeps me together

Christina: I try to keep my mom hip.  She’s a model mother.

What are you gravitating toward for spring?

Regina:  I was about to head into Michael Kors. I love the brights —  orange, navy, the bright greens.

Christina: The soft, romantic flowy,  flowery styles.

Regina, when it comes to your daughter’s stye, Anything you want to see her wear? 

… Like what she is wearing now. I wish she would wear this look more often. This is very cute. I think sometimes a lot of what she wears is dark. I think she should add more color to her wardrobe.

GURU Style Star: Caroline Tracy

I stumbled upon this cutie in the mall, sitting with her mom at a table just outside Starbucks (Level 4) the other day, and couldn’t wait to introduce you to Caroline Tracy —  this week’s GURU Style Star!

Love her sweet bow and layered look!

If only all the flowers already in bloom on 2-year-old Caroline’s outfit could bring us an early spring! Caroline is wearing a floral top from Naartjie Kids (Level 3) topped with a cardi and paired with coral corduroy jeggings. Her navy sneakers are from Stride Rite (Level 3) and feature subtle floral accents.

Describe Caroline’s style.

I love cardigans.  I like the little layering on babies. I think it looks so cute.  (…and anything she is allowed to make a mess of…)

What is your favorite store at the mall when it comes to shopping for Caroline?

I probably have bought the most at Gap Kids. I always end up buying a dress for her there.  I have never left Naartjie Kids empty handed.

Michelle adds that she has been in Naartjie Kids a few times now and that the last time an associate made it possible for her to shop by coloring with Caroline!

What brought you to the mall today?

Caroline wanted to come get coffee for mommy. That’s the only reason we were here. I had to beg her to go into a store first… After music class, she said “Go get mommy coffee.” I must drink a lot of coffee.

Caroline’s mom picked out this top.  However, at just 2, this little fashionista has something most of us likely wish we had — a personal shopper!  Michelle says her sister buys Caroline many of her clothes.
