The Art of Shaving is OPEN!

6 Aug

I remember times growing up when my dad would have a little piece of toilet paper attached to his face from where he cut himself while shaving. I’ve seen my husband also emerge from shaving with a few battle nicks.

An entire store dedicated to The Perfect Shave is now open at Towson Town Center. The Art of Shaving‘s mission is to teach men how to achieve a clean and comfortable shave with little or no irritation, maintain healthy skin and enjoy the shaving ritual. You’ll also find shaving instruments as well as skincare and haircare solutions.

All of the products are  botanically based and don’t have synthetic dyes or fragrances.

The Art of Shaving divides The Perfect Shave into Four Elements: Prepare, Lather Up!, Shave, and Moisturize and carries products to go with each step of the process.

The first step is to prepare with a pre-shave oil. There are essential oils such as sandalwood, lemon or lavender as well as an unscented option. Or, you can go for a pre-shave gel.  This step prepares the skin for a close and comfortable shave.

The botanically based moisturizing shaving creams continue to prep the skin and help to prevent irritation and razor burn.

There are also brushes available for shaving cream application.  According to the company, “ The Art of Shaving shaving brushes generate a rich and warm lather, softens and lifts the beard, help release trapped hairs, bring sufficient water to the skin and gently exfoliate.”

An important lathering tool!

Each of the razors at The Art of Shaving are handcrafted and can work with Gillette Company blades.

Time to Shave!

The final step is to moisturize with a gel, lotion or balm. Choose from unscented or a variety of essential oils. The moisturizer offers a soothing  and hydrating final step after shaving.

There are many more products available in store, including additional skincare and haircare ones.

The Art of Shaving has a fascinating backstory.  It all started in the kitchen of a couple’s New York City apartment back in 1995.  Eric Malka, who had a business background in the men’s grooming industry, had sensitive skin. Myriam Zauoi, who had spa industry experience and was studying Eastern medicine and aromatherapy, decided to create a special pre-shave oil for Eric using botanical ingredients and essential oils.  Her concoction resulted in a smooth shave and the beginning of something BIG!  The couple sold their car and used the profits to open their first store on a Manhattan side street in 1996.
Just six months after they opened the shop, the New York Times did a full page story and the business experienced a wild growth spurt. The couple opened a Madison Avenue location, became known as shaving experts, had a hardcover book published called The Art of Shaving  and continued to pursue The Perfect Shave. They ultimately created “The Four Elements of the Perfect Shave” system.  Proctor and Gamble acquired the company in 2009. In addition to being sold in high-end department stores, there are now nearly 70 stores nationwide.

You’ll find countless ways to indulge the man in your life!
