Match your Makeup to your Mood with a NEW line at LUSH

31 Jul

The name alone intrigued me — Emotional Brilliance!

When I heard about this NEW Makeup line at LUSH Fresh Handmade Cosmetics (Level 2), I had to check it out. Instead of wearing makeup colors that are deemed “right” for your skin tone or play well with your outfit, the philosophy here is all about matching your makeup to your “current state of mind,” based on colors that draw your attention.

Here’s how it works. You start by getting a color reading using the Emotional Brilliance Color Wheel.

Take a Spin

Manager Rebecca Rifkin told me to close my eyes, “clear my mind and go to my happy place.”

When I opened my eyes, she gave the wheel a spin. When it stopped, she had me pick the first three colors that appealed to me.  When you turn each color over, it corresponds to a personality trait and to an item of makeup in the same color. Some colors link to a lip color. Others come in liquid eye shadow form as well as liquid eyeliner.

Liquid Lips, $22.95 each

Liquid Eyeshadows, $22.95 each

Liquid Liner, $22.95 each

I picked these three colors which revealed the words — Decisive, Drive and Control. As I soon learned, it turns out that the order of the colors you select matters.

My picks

The first color chosen corresponds with either a strength or a weakness.  The reddish hue I selected is labeled Decisive.  Dare I sound indecisive, but I think at times it’s my strength and at other times a definite weakness. There are times when I make immediate choices and other occasions when I sway back and forth.

The second color is said to symbolize a subconscious need. Rebecca reports that the magenta that grabbed my attention means that I am craving more Drive.

Your third color pick is your talent. The almost metallic navy corresponds with Control.  Rebecca explains that the idea is that by taking control of things, I can get my drive back. I didn’t realize I was missing out on any, but hey I figure more is always a good thing!

My Decisive and Drive picks come as lip colors. Control comes in the form of a navy eye liner. I exercised my proclaimed decisiveness and went for the bold red lipstick!

Wearing Decisive Lipstick

While the lip color is far brighter than I normally wear, sure enough I ran into a few people afterward who complimented my lips. Hmmmm… I just may have to go back and get some so I can wear my decisiveness more often.

According to LUSH, “Wear those colors and you truly wear the word. It’s the power of suggestion – if one believes enough in something, there will likely be a change in behavior.”

Wondering how the colors and personality traits were matched up for this makeup line? LUSH worked with renowned strategic behavioral therapist, Lady Kennedy, who works with clients on shifting their behavior and attitudes. The same words that correspond to the different colors in the makeup line are ones she uses in her therapy sessions.

When I return, I’ll likely give the Emotional Brilliance Color Wheel another spin. I love that your picks are said to match your mood and needs at the time you play the game, leaving open endless possibilities for the future…

Have you given the wheel a spin?  Try it out and tell me what you think!
