Ever notice how something can look good in a store but then amazing when you see it on someone?
A few days after admiring a pair of geometric patterned pants at BCBGMAXAZRIA (Level 2), I saw a shopper wearing them and had to stop her!
Meet my newest GURU Style Star — Kimberly Brown!
When I met Kimberly at the mall, she had just given a presentation at Towson University on African American beauty culture represented in mid 20th century magazines. Love the outfit she chose. She paired the standout pants with a blazer from Express (Level 3). Her shoes are also from BCBG, circa 2008. Her bag also jumped out. It’s made from recycled snack wrappers.
Kimberly is studying at Howard University for her Ph.D. in U.S. History with an emphasis on 20th century black women and aesthetics. She lives in Silver Spring and is from Montgomery, Alabama.
Impulsive and organic.
They think I’m extra! I’m not.
My favorite store here would probably be BCBG. It’s gracefully functional.
I have crocheted bags that my grandmother made. I have red and blue.
It’s this green BCBG dress. It’s long. It’s flowy. It has ruffles. It is off the shoulder. It is everything! It is!!
Mix and match. You wear some expensive pants and then some shoes from years ago. The whole outfit shouldn’t be expensive. You use one standout piece at a time and the rest should already be in your closet to piece together the outfit.
I don’t like trends.
What inspires you in terms of fashion?
My Grandmother, the South, my Mama, Diana Ross, and every black woman at church. My mother defines Southern hospitality. My grandmother represents the work that it took to provide me with the luxury of education. Diana Ross of course is just everything!
