I’m excited to introduce our latest GURU Style Star.
I met Laquita Carrington in the mall parking lot, as we were both getting out of our cars. I noticed her stunning cranberry coat with faux fur trim and had to ask where she scored it.
It turns out that Laquita is a professional fashionista. In addition to being a frequent shopper at Towson Town Center, she is a manager at BCBGMAXAZRIA (Level 2), a freelance personal stylist and a former fashion model.
Laquita’s coat is an H&M find. Her purple blouse and large stud earrings are from BCBGMAXAZRIA. Her belt is “vintage” Arden B. from around five years ago. Laquita found her eggplant skirt at Forever 21. Her textured stockings and patent leather slingback heels are from Bakers.
She says that styles shown on the fashion show runways inspired her to mix different shades of a single color — purple on this day — to create her own color blocked look.
Now for our Q&A.
What is your style secret?
Laquita: I always focus on pieces, combining different things to make a complete outfit. I would also say that I’m not someone that follows a certain trend. I combine different trends.
What three words would you use to describe your style?
Laquita: I would say sexy, sophisticated and innovative.
What is your most treasured item in your closet?
Laquita: My most treasured item in my closet would be my shoes. My shoes make my outfit. I like to have my shoes be the focus of my outfit and build from there to create my look.
What kind of shoes do you go for?
Laquita: I like all different types. I like our BCBG style. I do Bakers. I love Eve. St. Laurent pumps. I’m not a label person. I’m all about the style of the shoe. I love something that’s very sexy but trendy at the same time.
What is the oldest item in your closet?
Laquita: Something of my mom’s. It’s a red jumper that has sequins on the bust. It’s hers from when she was in her 20s. It’s all red. The bust is black sequins. It has a jacket that goes with it. One of the stylists in our area came in and asked, “Where did you get that?”
When did you first like fashion?
Laquita: I was a little girl. We were a military family living in Germany. My mom first got us into modeling in Germany. She always kept us in the latest fashions. I just followed it. While in high school back in the states, everyone would be like, “Why do you have on heels?” I’m just my mother’s child. She has always dressed up from head to toe with full make up and still does today.
What would you tell someone who is in a style rut?
Laquita: I would say to people who are afraid of venturing out — Just try it one step at a time. When it comes to women wearing heels, just try it when going out. You may like it in the long run. Just try one piece at a time. Try a skinny jean, a pump, a bigger bag, a statement piece, a different silhouette…
